Katie and Anthony were married on September 10,2011 at Belle Mer in Newport RI. Katie's inspiration came from her love of geology. Colors of gray, deep blue, white and black were incorporated, as well as many textured elements. Glass, slate, branch, feathers, diamonds, candles and geodes were scattered throughout the reception! The tables were adorned with amazing textural gardens comprised of hydrangeas, orchids, millet, thistle, fiddleheads, dusty miller, roses, stock, dahlias, steel berry, viburnum berry and succulents! Katie and Anthony took their vows under our beautiful natural chuppa, overflowing with gorgeous white phalaenopsis orchids! The backdrop of the ocean added that extra special touch, making the moment just perfect! It was a beautiful day for a beautiful couple!

Anniversaries!

We love helping our past brides celebrate their anniversaries!!! Most of the time, the husbands call up and tell us to recreate their bouquets from the wedding!!! (Good move on their part!!!! lol) This is something we LOVE to do! We like to go back in time and remember making it the first time and hopefully when the bride sees it again, she remembers every detail and special moment from their wedding day!

This is Jackie Salett Orent! Jackie and Jonathan were married at Ledgemont Country Club in Seekonk, Ma! We had a great time designing for this wedding!!

For their first anniversary, her bridal bouquet was recreated!!!

We love that our brides love their original bouquets so much that their husbands call and request them for gifts!

Lindsey's Yellow Wedding

Here we have the bridal bouquet which features flowers such as roses, freesia, billy balls, succulents and balsa wood flowers and many more!

Then to the left is one of the bridesmaids bouquets. Full of yellow roses with grosgrain ribbon!!!

Here are two more bridesmaids bouquets. Still more yellow......but with some freesia and protea!

Garden centerpieces. Such a diverse yellow arrangement with different textures and heights. Every angle is different and is wondrous to look at. Each one is meant to be a conversation piece!

Awesome yellow candle sticks supplied by our bride make awesome stands for our assorted floral spheres. Way to go Lindsay for painting the candlesticks yellow!!!

Terrariums

We have been designing terrariums for the Westin Providence Hotel for a few months now and people continually ask us about them. So I figured I would share some information on these beauties!!

The art of the terrarium began it's popularity in the Victorian Era. They were first called Wardian Cases named after the founder Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward. While experimenting on insect growth, he unexpectedly discovered seedling ferns and sprouts of grass blooming inside the glass bottles used for the experiment! The science of terrariums was born!

Terrariums are a collection of compatible plants grown in an enclosed or partially enclosed clear container. The plants transpire moisture through their leaves which then condenses on the glass and travels back to the soil. This so called "rain effect" allows for minimal maintenance. No green thumb needed!

These gardens can be designed as small or as large as the imagination allows. Its as easy as 1,2,3!

#1-Choosing your container. Chose a transparent container either with or without a lid. A lid will provide the most suitable environment for the plants moisture intake. Pick interesting containers for visual interest. Apothecary jars, canning jars, and dome jars make for some beautiful arrangements.

#2- Layering your foundation. Place a layer of horticulture charcoal, then a layer spaghnum moss, topped with good quality soil and finished with a layer of decorative moss and/or rocks!

#3- Planting. Select plants that have visual interest. Pick plants that are slow growing and ones that thrive in a warm stable atmosphere. Ferns, ivies, violets, begonias, bromeliads, and succulents are varieties that work well. Set your plants in your foundation, give them a bit of water and enjoy! Your done! Of course if you want to get creative go ahead!! Have fun!!

Elizabeth and Taber 10/23/2010

Back in 2009 we received an email from a couple, Elizabeth and Taber, inquiring about our services for a wedding in 2010. The couple lived in New York, so much of the correspondence needed to happen via email. We assured Elizabeth that we accommodate out of town brides on a regular basis and she could be at ease knowing we would give the attention needed to capture her vision.

The planning began!

Elizabeth, like every bride, was on a budget. She needed to decide what elements were most important to her and her future groom. The couple envisioned a modern romantic setting. We worked together with them to choose the perfect colors for their theme. The palette was set for whites,creams,greens,browns and blues. This palatte is perferct for setting the romantic serene atmosphere!

The most important element to Elizabeth was the bridal party bouquets. She really wanted us to put a lot of attention into creating interesting and sizeable bouquets for her and her girls. Her bridesmaids were to wear contemporary vibrant blue dresses. We knew we had to choose flowers that would be really captivating yet not compete with such a bold color.

Bouquets were created using a compilation of hydrangea, garden roses, dahlias, succulents, ranunculus, queen ann's lace, and textured grasses.

The reception was held at The Biltmore Providence in RI.

She envisioned her reception to be warm and romantic with a classic flair. The grand room at the Biltmore screams romance so we knew that just a few touches would be all she needed.

We captured her feel with charming florals and simple candlelight.

Half the guest tables were set with modern glass cylinders filled abundantly with hydrangeas, roses, dusty miller, succulents, and various interesting grasses.

The other half of the guest tables were set with a multitude of candlelight. Succulents were set amongst the candles creating an alluring effect.

Even the cake adorned mini florets and succulents...

We were so pleased with the final results!

This couple was a delight to work with, and their vision was a success!

Laura and Patrick 9/11/10

Finally!

It has been a while since we shot out a teaser about this wedding. We are excited to finally be able to share these pictures!

Laura and Pat were married on September 11,2010. The ceremony and reception took place at the Botanical Gardens at Roger Williams Park. The ceremony and cocktail hour was held in the observatory greenhouse, while the reception was beautifully tented on the garden's grounds.

The bridal party chose attire in shades of black and white with accents of rich jewel tones. The girls bouquets were comprised of vandas, phalaenopsis, dahlias and calla lilies in shades of bright berry and deep purple. Very rich bouquets!

Laura's bouquets( yes that's plural) were stunning! The first bouquet Laura chose for her ceremony. An all white glamelia, accented with jewels and feathers, emphasised every detail of her Ysa Makino gown! She carried a second bouquet at the reception. A bouquet created with platnium jewels, deep red garden roses, purple callas, berry and violet shaded cymbidiums, vandas and phalaeonopsis. She could not have asked for more!!

We decided to play with the mother of the bride's bouquet, adding black feathers, making it fun, matching her great personality...

It's time........

The aisle was lined with a lush berry carpet. White florals accented with draping crystals and silver manzanita set the tone for an elegant ceremony.
How awesome are these white floral spheres?!

Satin, crystals and orchids suspended above as the couple exchanged their vows.

The transition into the striking colors began at cocktail hour. Tables were set with a mix of swirled berry and crinkled purple linens. Petite modern glass vases, diamonds and bright vanda orchids adorned each individual table.

Accents around the cocktail area really set the mood for a fun evening ahead!

Look at this placecard display! Berry crinkle linen, black picture frames, an enormous display of jewels, and of course gorgeous flowers! Delphinium, dahlias, orchids, and hydrangeas are massed in tall glass vessels carry the color theme. As if we could have planned it any better, the observatory showcased trees adorned with fuschia flowers! One positioned right above our table display!

A wild dramatic statement shows the guest another hint of what's to come!

Here is where the colors explode! The dinner tent is designed with a mix of table shapes, linens and floral centerpieces. Black and white draping and dance floor. Florals in all the hot shades. Violet lighting, crystals, diamonds, and myriads of candlelight.

Hypnotizing!

The tall glass centerpieces are filled with an abundance of florals, dripping with black crystal strands, and surrounded by a multitude of candlelight.

Black manzanita trees are adorned with black crystal strands and fuschia orchids. Below the tree sits a garden of lush florals. Again, the table is finished with candlelight and jewels!

A exquisite glass compote overflowing with hydrangea, roses, orchids, amaranthus and dahlias.

Tall glass vessels are filled with candles, encompassing the compote.

Silver beading, and diamonds finish off the design!

A multitude of modern black containers are centered on the table. Each is filled with a mass of one type of flower creating a patchwork quilt of color. Candles and diamonds are once again completing the design.

Bride and groom are exceedingly satisfied!

What a fun idea for a wedding cake!

The night is not over yet! A lounge area is furnished adjoining the reception area. White lounge furniture, black rugs, unique black mirrored tables, black shelving and silver vases create a city chic club! The silver vases were filled with stock, hydrangea, orchids and dahlias. Fun elements are tucked throughout!

Guest finish off the night relaxing in this spectacular area....

The collaboration of the following vendors made this wedding a great success! This was absolutely one of our all time favorites!

Grace Ormonde Photo Shoot

We were invited to design a tablescape for the New England issue of Grace Ormonde Wedding Style magazine! Grace Ormonde excels in providing innovative and creative assistance to brides and professionals in the wedding industry! Of course we graciously accepted!

The location was set at Stonehouse 1854, a beautiful historic seaside estate located in Little Compton, RI.

Our first step...choosing the perfect landscape for our design. The grounds were so amazing. Finding a great layout was easy!

Next step...vision.

Our designers conseptualized a table set with a juxtopositon of natural and modern elements. They chose a color palette of shades in yellow, green, white and gray.

Collaborating with other companies, our vision was now in motion.

Dinnerware and stemware are placed to perfection.

A collection of modern containers are positioned along the center of the table.

The containers are filled with an plethora of flowers. Cymbidium orchid, celoscia, amaranthus, flowering hebe, euphorbia, brunia, dusty miller, hosta, exotic foliage, fig branches, driftwood...

Chairs are placed.

Details are perfected.

Greenery..

When envisioning floral arrangements most people think of beautiful blooms. Our minds are trained to see focal points in shapes and colors and we tend to believe the true beauty lies in that realm. I want to challenge you to see beyond that image. Discover what helps to creates that image. Greenery........

Greenery has a bad reputation in the minds of consumers. Known as a filler, an inexpensive con-artist. It is just not true. Greenery is the backbone of most arrangements, lending itself to support the design. Expert floral designers use various greenery to create texture, movement, contrast and/or harmony.

Ivy paired with roses and hydrangea creates a soft English garden design. Ivy also creates movement whether trailing down or weaving throughout the arrangement.

Texture is achieved using greenery with natural seeds,buds or berries still attached. Seeded eucalyptus, snowberries, juniper and camellia are great examples. Texture is also achieved using soft greens like papyrus or dusty miller. This silver grey foliage of the dusty miller adds an interesting felt texture to your design. These types of foliage just cant help but to touch!

Contrast and harmony are achieved using foliage based on its color. Unusual foliage adds striking visual interest to arrangements. Coleus plants vary with the most amazing color combinations. Dracaena,aspidistra and ti leaves can range in color from light green to dark green as well as shades of dark pink and red. Some have variegations of stripes or speckled spots. Using green variegated foliage with white flowers brings repetition and rhythm to an arrangement. Your eyes will travel around and around. Pairing deep reds leaves with blue or violet flowers creates contrast, enhancing the individual blooms. Incorporate blue/grey or deep evergreen foliage to compliment the cool colors of blue, green and violet. Use solid green foliage like hosta or monstera leaves to highlight the warm shades of red, orange and yellow.

Greenery moves from support to center stage in modern contemporary designs. A dramatic arrangement can be created using only large impressive leaves like banana ,monstera , palms and elephant ears. Flowers are not missed in this style arrangement!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the time of year that we show our apprectiation for all that is good in our lives. Family and friends gather around to enjoy home cooked meals, football and fun!

A perfectly cooked turkey along with multitudes of vegetable entrees set the tone for feelings of warmth. Setting your table with beautiful linen, candles, flowers and natural embellishments ensures your guest will feel welcomed!

Here are a few tips:

Pick a color theme...orange with brown, burgandy, gold or even gray.

Linen....forget the paper and plastic. This is the time to pull out your beautiful linen.

Candlelight...even small votives add that extra special touch.

Floral elements... choose a single centerpiece or a multitude of arrangements. Bring in natural elements like birch, moss and acorns. Add the perfect seasonal fruit like pomegrants, articokes and persimmons. Use georgous blooms that fit into your color scheme.

Every extra touch counts. Your time and effort will not go unnoticed!

Spotlight on...........Hydrangea!

How is is that we have not introduced this amazing flower to you yet?!!!

The hydrangea is our number one pick for all our designs. Hydrangeas are big beautiful perennials that produce flowers in varoius colors and textures. They range from the stunning white "Annabelle" Aborescens to the lush and vibrant Mophead Macrophylla. Other varieties include Lacecap, Oakleaf and Pee Gee. Each variety is known for it's own unique features. Some have small delicate flat florets while others have large full flowers. Some plants produce flowers that are vibrant in color, while others are specific only to white. The hydrangea plant is most known for its color variations. Growers can control the color by adjusting the ph level of the soil in which the plant is grown. Some plants even change tones just from replanting and adjusting to their new environment. Just when you thought it could not get any more beautiful, the plant ages seasonally turning flowers into the most amazing deep toned jewels!

Just look at the pictures and you will see how this magnificent flower impacts our designs. It truely is one of nature's most impressive presents!

Flower of the Week

Can't take our eyes off of this AMAZING fiddlehead fern!!! Must share with you!!!!!!

Fiddleheads are the coiled croziers of the ostrich fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris, which is found in an almost continuous belt in the north temperature zone around the world.

However, it is only in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and the state of Maine that its use as a spring delicacy has developed and thrived. While the native habitats of the ostrich fern are the lightly shaded woodlands, on the fertile alluvial soils along rivers, the plant will readily adapt to the home garden. Fiddleheads can be grown in vegetable gardens or incorporated as part of your landscaping in shaded areas.

Fiddleheads prefer partial shade. Growth will be suppressed in full sunlight or in excessively shaded areas.

In parts of the world fiddlehead ferns have been eaten for centuries. In Australia, New Zealand and Asia, they are a part of a traditional diet. The young, tender fiddlehead ferns are prepared and eaten like leaf vegetables. Each culture has a preference as to how the fiddlehead ferns are prepared and eaten.

In Indonesia, they would be eaten in a spicy coconut sauce. Koreans prepare the ferns as a side dish that resembles sauteed vegetables. In Japan, they are a delicacy when roasted. In North America and Canada, the ferns are boiled or steamed and then eaten with melted butter or vinegar.

RANUNCULUS!!!!!

These flowers are so gorgeous it's hard to even put it into words!

Here's a little information on these RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING blooms:

The word ranunculus is Latin for "little frog" which came about because of the flower's growth habits -- preferring to blossom in exceptionally moist atmospheres. Ranunculus are native to Asia and are celebrated both for it's medicinal properties as well as it's beauty. They come in an assortment of different colors and styles. The heads of the ranuculus flower are considered an exceptional sight to see, as most species burst with lustrous petals that take on a thin, crepe-like appearance.

Inspirational Mini Vacation --- New Jersey!

It's amazing how a little break from the norm can really rejuvenate and excite you.....I just returned from a mini vacation to visit family in New Jersey and I've come back more inspired than ever! I think after looking at these pictures you'll see why....!

Day One....My aunt Kathy took me to a FABULOUS garden center called Calgo Gardens. Man do they have the right idea. Not only is the gift shop to die for but the grounds are breath taking! I loved their color combinations....container gardens comprised of bright orange pumpkins and fabulous foliage, mini succulent gardens, the most amazing garden pottery, a garden shed where a portion of the roof was planted with succulents (if you follow the blog at all you know how much FBS looooooves succulents!), impressive grasses, fall mums and more.....! Their selection of materials coupled with out of this world containers has me ITCHING to design fall planters (Don't forget that we at FBS we also love to do this sort of thing)!!!!! And by the way....don't underestimate the beauty of tall grasses! For fall weddings, these beauties make great ceremony pieces (especially when planted in a fabulous container)....especially if the ceremony is outdoors. Sometimes the most beautiful designs are just that simple!

(I'm pretty sure Luke loved this place as much as I did!)

Day Two....Aunt Kathy took me by a friend's farm who has a passion for dahlias and grows about 400 plants every year "just for fun". Ummmm...why can't he live in RI!!!!!!!!!!???? Check out how well maintained his plants are...each supported with a decorative iron stake....the colors of his dahlias are outrageous!!! Makes me hang my head in shame when I think about my measly 50 plants that are sharing the garden with 8 million weeds. Oh well....maybe next year I can do better....

Day Three....My Aunt is a master gardener and walking around in her yard is like walking around at the Roger Williams Botanical Garden! Seriously...I've never seen anything so beautiful. Where she is located in NJ, they are one planting zone different than we are in RI so she has the ability to plant things that we can't........its just not fair! Beautiful flowers, foliage and berries that I can't plant in my own yard??! I wish I had never seen what I've been missing!!! Anyway...check out these amazing photos of her yard...especially the meandering ponds!

Day Four....After walking around her yard for four days now and picking out all my favorite plants and flowers from her garden, I muster the courage to ask Auntie if she will allow me to create some floral arrangements from her garden! She said yes and so I took a golf cart and some pruning shears and away I went! After an hour of picking and a full golf cart later, I set up shop at the the dining room table. Using some antique pottery as containers I went to work. The pictures don't do it any justice at all (darn that inside flash!) but the colors, textures and materials that came out of that garden were AMAZING. Check out the mango colored coxcomb, the magnolia pods, the cat tails and the rusty colored sedum! The big lesson here is that our yards are filled with FABULOUS, unexpected material perfect for a floral arrangement...even at this time of year when our gardens have seen better days. Think outside the box! I used things like green tomatoes, stems of unripened raspberries, a branch of ginkgo, feathery grasses, and unusual pods. These kinds of things make the best arrangements!!! So get creative, go out in your yards, and whip up something totally unexpected! Even some weeds are gorgeous!!!!!!!!

Last but not least...just had to share my new favorite fall palette with you (in case there is a bride out there who needs some help in this department!). Inspired by orange-mango colored coxcomb planted close to a soft grey foliage that I have to discover the name of....I am loving the thought of different shades of grey with deep oranges, mango hues and even a hint of rusty reddish-orange. Somebody please indulge me!!!!

One of FBS's Designers Gets Married!! -- Newport, RI

Good Morning readers, it's Stephanie here ... and yes, I got married!!

If you don't know already, I'm kind of obsessed with succulents, organic elements and the color green, so naturally, this was the color palette for my wedding. I am also a huge fan of vintage styles, industrial qualities and graphic elements. Combining all of these factors seemed obvious to me, although explaining this thought process to most people was not easy, as their reaction was, "what? those don't go together... that's kind weird!". I refused to listen to them as I saw the whole wedding design in my head for over a year. Of course, the people that stood by my design and encouraged it tremendously was Semia and all my co-workers at FBS. Semia gave me the opportunity to create my vision and I couldn't have done it without her support, help and advice!

Brian and I had the wedding at the Island House at Belle Mer in Newport, RI. It was my dream location and the neutral background and gorgeous beach setting was just perfect!

I had this insane idea to make my wedding invitations on screen printed balsa wood because of my love of the graphic nature of wood grain. The whole process of cutting down, sanding and screen printing the thin wood took me way longer than I want to admit, but I couldn't be happier with the results, and my guests really seemed to like them!

And of course, I just had to wear those bright green shoes to tie everything in!

I loved the idea of the cocktail space to be bright and fun and Tony from Ormonde Productions provided us with the coolest green silk light fixtures I could ask for!

I have my background in Interior Design as well so using fun printed assorted fabric for my bouquet wraps was a natural decision.

My dream is to have a living succulent wall , but living in New England and not on the West Coast, made me have to think outside of the box... So we came up with a living succulent work of art! I have a degree in Studio Art so pulling in my easel and painting background was a great personal touch!

I spent months trying to find a vintage typewriter that actually worked as my guest book...About 3 days before the wedding I was about to give up the idea until Stuart Horwitz, my event manager at Belle Mer, surprised me with his own typewriter obsession and let me borrow one of his personal machines! It was one of the nicest gestures from a vendor and my guests are still raving about it! And can you believe Stuart had one with a wood grain veneer?!

Our place card table was essential to the design of the wedding. I used Belle Mer's Tuscan Table (perfect organic wood grain element) to house a moss and succulent filled garden. I used large metal letters for our intials and gorgeous glass cloches to showcase gorgeous succulents. My actual place cards were pieces of balsa wood attached to large industrial metal nails.

My cake, made by Maureen at Something Different Cake Couture was EXACTLY what I envisioned!! I think Maureen might have thought I was insane to ask for a wood grained pattern carved into the wedding cake, but as you can see, it's just perfect! And not to mention it tasted AMAZING!

The ladies at FBS used awesome elements besides succulents and moss too. Whimsical Billy Balls, depetaled sunflowers, wooden flowers, wooden stumps and globe thistle were just some of them.

We had three different style centerpieces for our tables, consisting of a beautiful garden with a cloche and succulent, a square glass dish with gorgeous flowers and manzanita branches, and

a grouping of assorted vases. It was perfect.

Check out the gorgeous bird cage veil and hair flowers made by hand from Nancy Spirito of Bridal Finery in East Greenwich! Yet another vendor that carried out my vision perfectly!

My bouquet was by far the most amazing bouquet I'll ever have held! Semia made this one for me using all the elements I love so much! Wooden flowers, succulents, paper flowers, Dahlias, Brunea berries, poppy pods, Chocolate Cosmos etc etc etc...

When I saw this on the day of my wedding for the first time, I jumped up and down for about five minutes!

To continue the vintage feel, we had a photobooth at the reception. By far, it was one of the best ideas we had. Our guests were in the booth, from RI Photobooths, the entire night! They could go in it as many times as they wanted and we got a disk of all the photos. It was so great to be able to see all of our guests having so much fun! I would recommend it to EVERYONE!

Words can't even begin to describe how AMAZING our sweetheart table was! Semia asked me if she could surprise me with that element of the decor and surprise she did!! It was OVERFLOWING with RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME succulents!!! It was the best surprise I've ever had!! I could hardly focus on eating because all I wanted to do was stare at all of the succulents!! Semia completely out did herself with this one!!

To future FBS brides, if Semia asks you for your permission to let her surprise you, GIVE IT TO HER!!!!

We incorporated balsa wood flowers and succulents in the boutonnieres as well.

I can't believe I found metal typewriter like buttons with our initials on them! Score!

I needed to make sure that the table numbers weren't your average table numbers of course! So I went to the hardware store and bought metal house numbers for that industrial feel!

Flower of the Week!

BRRR!! Can you feel the chill in the air this week?! Autumn is arriving, and all of the ladies at the flowershop couldn't be more excited (as long as we have our sweaters on of course)!

When we think of late summer and early fall weddings and parties there is always one flower that in quintessential to our designs........

THE DAHLIA!!!

So naturally, we had to make this amazing bloom the FLOWER OF THE WEEK!!

We're fortunate to be able to grow these beautiful flowers right at the family farm so Dahlia harvesting is pretty routine around here!

If ever there were a flower that knew the meaning of variety, the Dahlia is it! While it's colors are limited to the warm ranges of red, orange, yellow, pink and white, it's flowers come in a plethora of shapes, sizes and bloom categories.

Each variation of the Dahlia petal is stunning. Their petals can be spiky, wispy, round, thin etc etc etc. They bloom from mid summer all the way up to frost. Many times they become more spectacular as the weather cools. They like well drained soil and full sun.

If you haven't grown Dahlias before, you should really give them a try -- the variety and vividness of the bloom is difficult to find in any other flower.

We're so excited to share our flower of the week with you, because it's AMAZING!!!

As many of you know, we are designing the florals for our very good friend in the industry, Laura Goforth from Russell Morin Fine Catering. While we can't give away all of our secrets for the upcoming wedding this weekend, we just had to share one of the fabulous flowers we ordered from Thailand.

Our flower of the week is...... the GORGEOUS VANDA ORCHID!!!

The Vanda Orchid is totally tropical, coming specifically from the warm islands of the South Pacific. They prefer full sun exposure, warm temperatures, lots of watering and lots of humidity. They have long, trailing roots that draw moisture and nutrients from the atmosphere.

There are many size and marking variations on these exotic orchids. The Vanda Orchid flowers are saucer sized, flat blooms with an extremely heavy substance and a crystalline texture that seems to glisten in the light. They can be spotted, etched, cross hatched or solid in their coloring and also have a powerful fragrance.

These orchids are just beautiful paired with other blooms and definitely make a statement by themselves as well.

We cannot wait to showcase our florals this weekend at the botanical garden and showcase our very special Vanda Orchid! Here's a sneak peak at one centerpiece style (sshhhh, don't tell Laura!):

That's right, we're starting a new weekly blog! Every week we come across a beautiful bloom that we fall in love with, whether it's for one of our brides, parties or everyday designs. We think that it's about time we share that special inspirational flower with you too! So here goes:

Our flower of the week is........ the ZYGOPETALUM ORCHID!

We picked this up at the Boston Flower Market this week and can't stop staring at it!

Here's some interesting information about what makes this orchid so special:

This genus derives its name from the Greek zygon (yoke) and petalon (petal), and is a perfect description of the growth at the base of the lip. These plants produce multiple blooms that can last for up to 8 weeks.

The Zygopetalum is native to the mid-elevation regions of South America. Because these orchids produce leathery strap-like leaves, they are often classified as "soft orchids". The blossoms are usually 2 to 3 inches in diameter and grow laterally along the leaves. The blooms are known for their waxy look and feel and for their subtle fragrance. They come in a variety of colors like green, purple, raspberry and burgundy.

Grow these orchids in a well-drained medium, like fir bark, in a warm sunny location. Since these orchids are native to South America, Zygopetalums can take more heat than the average orchid, as long as it can have mild temperatures at night.

We hope this flower has inspired you as much as it has us!

Alex's Perfect Farm Wedding --- Rehoboth, Ma

Check out these pics we took after spending the morning setting up at the GORGEOUS Five Bridge Inn in Rehoboth, Ma this weekend. First of all, the weather couldn't have been more perfect for our bride, Alex! Blue skies and 78 degrees on a mid-August day! The design for the day was one of our favorites, fresh farm cut flowers in 3 different styles, one of them being an assortment of mason jars...oh how we love mason jar arrangements! The other centerpiece styles were abundant gardens and perfect galvanized pails. Some of the flowers we used were pinnacle hydrangea from the farm, gorgeous dahlias (yes, it's dahlia season!!!!!), purple hydrangea from Holland, stock, purple roses, kale, millet, scabiosa, succulents and many many more! One aspect we loved was using fresh herbs like rosemary and mint. Alex is in the wine industry so the mixture of scents along with beauty was very important to her and we agree! Using wine bottles with customized labels for table numbers was also perfect and very fitting for our wine connoisseur. We also designed the place card table using moss and amazing succulents, candles, huge lanterns and tall cylinder vases in a modern style with hydrangea, stock and millet. The bride's family are quite the crafters, too! We were greeted by family members hard at work putting the finishing touches on their cork place cards, moss baskets, ceremony ribbons and so much more. How great is it to know that family members and bridesmaids put in a ton of elbow grease to give the decor a very personal touch?

The Gorgeous and Inspiring Colors of Italia!

It's Steph here, I'm back from my honeymoon after my AMAZING wedding at Belle Mer (yes those pics are soon on their way, right Kristin Spencer?! haha). I couldn't work on our blog without sharing some of my photos from our honeymoon in Italy. The colors and flowers and foods of Italy are beyond anything I can ever imagine. And guess what?! The Italians just might be more obsessed with succulents than all we are!! The succulent plants were the most amazing plants I've ever seen and it's always that much better when you see them growing in their natural element!

Everyone needs to take a minute to look through these pics. I have come back from Italy so inspired and ready to work!!

Southwest Flowers

Some of our FBS crew traveled to Sedona, Arizona! A fun-filled vacation packed with hiking, sight-seeing, and of course AMAZING flowers.

One of the favorites of the trip was the Agave plant.

a favorite at FBS. There was even a Manzanita Campground.

This vacation was amazing! Trip to the Grand Canyon was a must - seeing one of the wonders of the world ... sooo much fun! They had an exhibit of the flowers that grew there! WHAT LUCK!

Surprise Surprise!!!

This past weekend, FBS had the pleasure of designing flowers for one of our own designers…STEPH. Here are a few pictures highlighting Steph’s inspirations from color to the materials used.

Back in May, we blogged about Steph’s then upcoming wedding and we hinted at a surprise element. Although we let her control every detail about her décor (haha Steph – we love you for it!) we begged her to hand over her sweetheart table to the FBS team. The surprise design was a sweetheart table COMPLETELY COVERED in amazing succulents and moss along with custom dishes that went along with her modern organic theme. Here’s a video of us constructing the table.

It was the most fun design to make! Thank goodness they were good sports about this! We only left room for their glasses and dishes. Steph’s favorite thing in the world is a succulent so we thought it would be fitting if the newlyweds dined with them. Here’s another video of us finishing up the design and a picture of the final product from Kristin Spencer Photography.

MINUTES before walking down the aisle, FBS got a special text message from the bride (she had snuck into the Island house to take it all in and see her surprise).

TEXT MESSAGE: “FLOWERS ARE AMAZZZZZZZZZZZINGGGGGG!!! OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!! I am in LOVE with EVERYTHINGGGGGG!!! SWEETHEART TABLE IS OUT OF CONTROL!!!! Sooo excited!!! Yayayayayayay!!!”

Thank you Steph for allowing us the opportunity to surprise you. We loved every minute of working on your wedding.

Our Peonies are Getting Around!

Jackie and Jonathan's Ledgemont Country Club Wedding - Seekonk, Ma

Talk about color!!!! Jackie and Jonathan had a vibrant wedding palette for their late May wedding....a gorgeous combination of hot pinks, bright corals, deep oranges with a hint of chartreuse green. This is one of our favorite palettes at FBS- it photographs beautifully -you can never go wrong with these colors!!! And the flowers Jackie chose to highlight this palette couldn't have been more splendid...peonies, hydrangeas, garden roses, tulips and calla lilies.....it doesn't get any better!

A BIG thank you to Rupert Whiteley for some of these amazing pictures!

Jackie and Jonathan had a mixture of gorgeous high and low centerpieces. Their highs were designed in impressive large glass vases while their lows were arranged in glass compotes. I love the way a compote looks on the table - it raises the flowers ever so slightly...giving it a more elegant feel.

Jackie and Jonathan's sweetheart table was soooooo beautiful! I love designing what I call "sweetheart garlands" for these extra special tables. It's a design I like to make right on site using lush blooms, petals, and of course candlelight. It screams romance!

Is there anything more "delicious" than fresh peonies on a cake??? For the place card table we chose to create a more "free-form" design....using tall grasses, huge orange callas, tons of tulips and GORGEOUS coral charm peonies. I always love a little something different on the place card table...it's an area where you can really play!

Jackie's bouquets were incredible if I do say so myself!!! Look at the way those bright maids' bouquets pop against their gorgeous berry colored dresses. The combination of peonies, tulips, callas and roses were incredible...we chose not to add any green to these bouquets so that they would look especially rich and luxurious against their gowns. Our beautiful bride Jackie carried a huge bouquet comprised entirely of hot pink peonies....fluffy...romantic....fragrant.....amazing!!!

Jackie, we had so much fun designing your flowers for you! Thank you for loving flowers (and for that matter brightly colored flowers!!!) as much as we do...it makes our job just that much more enjoyable!!

Elegant Wedding at the Biltmore! -- Providence, RI

Corey's Bar Mitvah, Hi-Hat Style!!--Providence, RI

A couple of weeks ago we had the privilege of stepping outside the box for a funky bar mitzvah at a swanky jazz club in Providence. We waited anxiously for the photos from that day and they're finally ready! We just had to share these professional photos from Corey's amazing photographer, Jaime Marland.

For Corey's Bar Mitzvah, our client was looking for something young and fresh but still in keeping with the hot, jazzy atmosphere of The Hi Hat in Providence.

We went with a black, red and silver design using hot red gerber daisies and gigantic peonies in the low centerpieces and red carnation balls nestled in tall glossy black manzanita branches perched in skinny black vases. We funky-ed it up using silver wire in assorted thicknesses and wrapped it around the spheres and around the tall gerber daisies. The lighting at the Hi Hat made the silver wire glisten on the tables! On the three long kids tables, we used shiny silver balls, vases with daisies, and carnation spheres...then we took it to another extreme by using red shoestring licorice, dried black beans, and tons of silver beads!! The result was a super fun table that we're sure provided hours of entertainment!

We also had the opportunity to design the candy table (can we tell you how hard it was to not "sample" the candy?!). We used assorted size apothecary candy jars and silver mesh netting to make one appetizing table!

We had a blast working on this bar mitzvah and wish wish Corey all the best!

Yup...you heard it right! One of our own is getting married this summer and we couldn't be more excited!!!! Stephanie....a talented floral designer...as well as the brainchild of our beautiful blog (yes...it was all her design) and the creator of "Color Palette Friday".....is getting married at Belle Mer's Island House. I can't give away any major decor details (she's sworn me to secrecy!) but all I have to say is that we will be mixing florals and foliage with other "elements" that are truly original.....think "industry meets mother nature". Steph just "unveiled" her story boards to me today....oh my gosh they are so inspirational and so exciting and new. FBS will definitely be creating some original designs for this event and we couldn't be more psyched about it.....we are so looking forward to the challenge and of course...to surprising Steph on her wedding day (sorry babe...you can't know EVERYTHING about your decor...we've got to hit you with a few surprises).

Twice a month leading up to the wedding we will share with our viewers a "snip it" of what's going on in Steph's brain....just a picture or two...to give you a sense of her style and the direction of the decor. Much like a puzzle, you're going to want to see how all these elements end up fitting together so STAY TUNED!!! After the event we will be posting a trillion photos as well as the "story boards" she created to organize her fabulous ideas. We can't wait....!!!! Congratulations Steph and Brian!!!!!!

Allyson and Peter's Wedding--Providence, RI

When Allyson told us that she was having her ceremony at the Roger Williams Botanical Center and her reception at the Hi-Hat in Providence, we were thrilled! To accent the swanky club feel of the Hi-Hat we used deep reds and oranges and lots of texture. Her bouquet was classic with deep orange Calla Lilies and a touch of grass. Her maids had a combination of orange Callas, Red Sox Callas, Black Magic, Natalia and Gypsy Curioso roses, red Hypericum berries and orange Crocosmia for a touch of funk! Her centerpieces worked with the sexy and sultry club feel using the same colors and textures of the bouquets but with accents of black feathers. Since the Hi-Hat is a night club the tables are all different sizes and shapes, so working with that kind of layout, we made sure we had a variety of centerpiece styles. One other style was a skinny clear glass cube with three floating Red Sox Calla Lilies at different heights wrapped with copper wire to pull in a little bit of that Jazz again! Allyson and Peter's openness to a funky and swanky color palette made this wedding a blast to work on! If you're looking for a funky style to your wedding, definitely consider incorporating texture, a modern color palette and a touch of whimsy into your decor like Allyson did here. And can you believe Allyson's mother made the wedding cake?!

The Farm is Bursting with Color!!

Spring blossoms are at their peak right now and it's very evident at the farm! We have rows of pink cherry blossoms, white and pink dogwood and bleeding hearts. Not to mention a ton of purple and white lilacs! We've been incorporating these gorgeous blooms into our everyday arrangements and event decor over at the shop...you know you want one too! OK, I couldn't resist....I mean it's not everyday that one of us vendors is the one tying the knot!!!!

In case you don't know her, Laura Goforth ( pictured on the left with me and Kristin Spencer at my wedding) from Fine Catering by Russell Morin, has been responsible for many many gorgeous weddings throughout the years and now......it's her turn!!!!!!!!

So not only am I thrilled for her on a personal level, but I'm beyond psyched to design her wedding flowers!!!! We're going for a truly rich palette...but I can't give it away...you just have to wait until September. Oh....and the most exciting news of all??? Laura told me I can SURPRISE her with her bridal bouquet! That's right!! Its' a floral designer's dream come true! I've already decided that I'm going to create two amazing numbers for her.....one white...one full of color....neither are going to be traditional in any way. I've got goose bumps already.....! Stay tuned for the week of her wedding when we unveil the designs....no peaking Laura!!!

Chrissy and Danny's Ocean Cliff Wedding - Newport, RI

OK....Chrissy was possibly one of the nicest brides ever!!!! So laid back and completely trusting...which allows us to get our creative juices flowing!!! One of my fondest memories of Chrissy.....? She came into the studio a few days before the wedding and saw the buckets of her flowers spread out all over the shop and she burst into tears.....happy tears of course!!! She kept walking from bucket to bucket just touching everything and saying....."what's this?...I love it!"......"what's this...? I love it!!!". Do you remember any of this Chrissy??? :)

Well...we loved it too...a gorgeous palette comprised of plum, green and ivory tones. For flowers we used late summer blooms with tons of texture and of course introduced one of our favorite signature elements.....fresh herbs! Interspersed amongst the gorgeous white and green hydrangea, purple dahlias, white freesia, aubergine scabiosa, white roses and green hypericum, we were able to accent with fresh rosemary and mint. The centerpieces couldn't have smelled any better....we loved creating them...the shop smelled so amazing!!! :)

Chrissy carried an elegant mix of all timeless creamy white and green blooms....hydrangea, freesia, roses, lisianthus, herbs....it doesn't get any more romantic than that. Coupled with a sentimental handkerchief and brooch....even her bridal bouquet "wore" jewelery! I love incorporating a sentimental or unexpected non-floral element in the bridal bouquet. It's such a personal statement....I love to see what my brides bring me. Chrissy....you looked beautiful...always smiling...thank you again for all the fun!!!!
